Women of Influence: MEET BRITTNY ROBINS, FOUNDER OF FLAWLESS BY FRIDAY
Britt founded Flawless by Friday at the age of 27 to help make everyone feel like the most flawless version of themselves — for life’s big moments and even just for every day. Growing up as one of five girls on a farm north of Toronto, Britt was the resident makeup artist, hairdresser and skincare consultant. She loved seeing that when her sisters looked their best, it really made them feel their best, and this inspired her passion for the beauty industry. Britt believes that feeling like your best, most beautiful self has a direct impact on how you approach your day.
My first job ever was… A camp counsellor at camp Manitou. I taught baseball even though I had never played baseball before. I learned quickly that the girls liked learning baseball from me so I had to pick that one up quickly!
I would tell my 20-year-old self… Care less about what other people think. It’s really important to acknowledge that most of us are affected by the opinions of our peers. I always remind myself to just care more about my dreams than about the opinions of my acquaintances. I would also remind myself that my closest family and friends will always support me whether I succeed or fall short.
I decided to be an entrepreneur because… I always sort of knew. My dad is a serial entrepreneur who was always thinking one step ahead. I started to see the same patterns in myself and always had a goal of running my own company by the time I was 30.
My proudest accomplishment was… The time I summited Mount Kilimanjaro or landing my first big pitch. It was with two major department stores at the same time and I stood up in front of 12 people.
My boldest move to date was… Writing a CEO of a major company that I was going to be in their city on business and when they agreed to see me, I booked a flight.
I surprise people when I tell them… That I met my husband when I was on a business trip in Europe — he was the bar manager at my hotel.
My best advice to people starting a business is… Done is better than perfect. Just get started and try your best not to overthink it.
My best advice from a mentor was… Shelley Rozenwald told me to never use the word “hopefully”. If you don’t believe it is a “certainly”, you can bet that nobody else will as well.
My biggest setback was… Learning parts of running a business that I did not have a background in. Learning how to run a company not just from a sales and marketing perspective, but from a financial and logistics capacity as well.
I overcame it by…. For a long time it felt like I was trying to learn a foreign language and I had to study financial statements to be able to communicate them to potential investors.
Work/life balance is… Recognizing when you need to shut it down and put down your phone and spend time with your family and friends.
If you googled me, you still wouldn’t know… That I love fantasy movies, hate wearing high heeled shoes and secretly have a huge fear of public speaking despite how often I do it.
I stay inspired by… The unbelievably hard working people surrounding me.
The future excites me because… We plan to keep creating and innovating.
My next step is… To launch our new cosmetics line “Flawless in Fifteen” and further help people feel like their most flawless selves.
