A Flawless Guide to SPF

I can almost hear you saying, “Yeah, we get it — sunscreen is a must,” and you’re right. At this point, everybody knows that wearing a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher sunscreen is a must. But here is a guide on the types of sunscreen out there and how to reapply throughout the day without effing up your makeup (or your skin in the long run).

1. Which is which?

First thing’s first always shop for a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Broad-Spectrum ensures that you’re protected against UVA and UVB rays (premature aging and sun burns).

2. Know your ingredients.

If you want to go chemical-free, zinc oxide, a physical protectant, is the only ingredient you need for great broad-spectrum protection. Chemical sunscreens are great for those with a deeper complexion or anyone who isn’t into that “white cast” as it can give a better look and feel texture wise and applies more matte and transparent. Keep a look out for active ingredients ending with –salate or –benzone.

3. Understanding the SPF factor

If like me, you’re confused by the numbers on the label, here’s what you really need to know. SPF 30 blocks 97 percent of UV rays, SPF 50 blocks 98 percent, and anything over that is marketing spin, it doesn’t give you much more skin radiation protection than SPF 50.

4. The SPF in your tinted moisturizer doesn’t cut it

SPF in makeup isn’t enough. Many foundations and tinted moisturizers have SPF properties, but not a large enough amount to provide adequate protection from the sun’s rays. BB creams tend to have a higher SPF factor, which makes it an excellent option but chances are you wont be applying a mask of BB cream. So while it’s a great addition to sunscreen it can’t replace it unfortunately. Apply a layer of sunscreen before applying makeup and don’t forget to reapply again two hours later.

5. Reapplying without ruining your makeup

Luckily there are a ton of options to reapply your sunscreen without compromising your entire look. You can invest in a setting spray with an SPF 50 factor that you can carry with you and reapply without every two hours with no problem. If you’re an oily friend you can also opt for a powder version to get rid of that mid-day shine and protect your skin. Reapplying your SPF has never been easier so there’s no excuses – have a Flawless summer!
