The seasons are changing and so is our skin. But not to worry, here are five steps to get your skin Flawless for Fall!
Step 1: Double Cleansing
I know. It’s a struggle enough to wash your face at all some nights, let alone twice in one go, but trust me it makes all the difference. Double cleansing generally starts with using an oil-based cleanser to lift makeup, pollution, sunscreen and all other grime off your skin to prep it for a deeper cleanse; then you follow up with a foaming cleanser and that’s all easy-peasy (right?)
Now all your skincare products like your masks, serums and moisturizers will also be able to work much more effectively on a clean surface.
Step 2: Exfoliating with AHA’s
AHA's are the unsung heroes of the skincare world and are often overlooked in favour of a scrub. Which is fair, generally when one thinks of exfoliating we think of assaulting our skin with salt scrubs in the hopes of it revealing a soft, smooth baby-bottom complexion. But the truth is, many scrubs have a rough, coarse texture, which can aggravate skin because of its abrasiveness. Here is where AHA's come in to play. AHA stands for Alpha Hydroxy Acids (yes, it sounds scary but fear not) and they come in the form of Glycolic and Lactic acids to name a few. Unlike physical scrubs, AHA's are leave-on treatments. They work to gently eliminate dead skin cells, tighten pore walls, and get rid of texture and acne scars - dull skin... Where?
Step 3: Targeted Treatments
This is the part of your routine that you can tailor specifically to your skincare concerns. Treatments often come in the forms of a serum, essence or mask and are there to give your routine that extra boost. They contain concentrated ingredients that address any issue from pore-refining, acne, brightening, hyper-pigmentation and wrinkles; this is essentially the perfecting step. Free radicals, pollutants and UV rays cause premature aging and dullness, which is not fun. This is why an antioxidant rich morning routine is important, especially in conjunction with a sunscreen (we’ll get to that later). No matter how your skin changes during the season there is a treatment step out there for you to help protect and repair your skin!
Step 4: Protect with SPF
While we’re saying goodbye to summer that doesn’t mean we’re bidding our SPF a farewell too! The importance of using sunscreen year-round is often overlooked. Besides the obvious reasons why we should wear sunscreen (if cancer isn’t enough), not wearing it also exacerbates nearly every skin concern. The harsh UV rays cause premature aging, hyper-pigmentation and if you suffer from acne, deep tissue scarring. UV rays are still present throughout the fall and winter and even during rainy gloomy seasons so even if you’re stepping out for a couple of minutes, skipping out on sunscreen definitely isn’t worth the long-term damage.
Step 5: Sleep!
We’re all busy juggling work, school and a social life – but the OG skin saviour is some good old sleep. Trying to get at least 6 hours of sleep a night or more will make all the difference in your skins radiance. To put it simply, a good nights sleep promotes collagen production so that your skin is plumper, firmer and more radiant. Enough said!
